For the few who measure love in lifetimes, **TWAIN** is the fine-jewelry maison that sets two birth-stones into a single heirloom piece — one for each soul in a bond — so that devotion is not described but *worn*. Where other jewelers sell a stone, TWAIN gives form to the space *between* two people: the toi-et-moi setting, made personal by the heavens each was born under, made permanent by the hand of the bench.

A solitaire is a portrait of one. TWAIN is a portrait of *two* — and of the bond that holds them in the same setting. **I. Devotion over decoration.**
The bond is the product; the stone is its vessel. We never let sparkle out-shout meaning. Every piece must answer *whose bond is this?* before it answers *how does it catch the light?* — this governs copy, casting, and gifting ritual alike.

**II. Restraint is the loudest wealth.**

**Secondary: The Sage.** Heritage, the literary shadow, the quiet authority of the stars and of craft passed bench-to-bench. The Sage gives TWAIN its restraint, its refusal to gamify, and its old-money composure — the Lover would gush; the Sage makes the Lover *whisper*.

**The blend in one sentence:** *TWAIN loves like a poet and carries it like a scholar* — feeling, expressed with discipline. When the two archetypes tension (the Lover wants to declare, the Sage wants to withhold), **the Sage sets the volume and the Lover sets the meaning.**

> *The origin myth every maison carries. Heritage-framed, told once, told the same way everywhere. This is canon — do not improvise around it.*

There is an old word for *two*. Before "couple," before "pair," English had **twain** — a word that did not merely count to two but *bound* them: *the twain shall be one*. It is a word for things that belong together so completely that to name one is to summon the other.

And there was a man who knew that bond by heart. Mark Twain — who took his pen-name from the riverman's cry for safe, deep water — loved his wife Olivia for thirty-four years; of her, plainly, he wrote: *"Wherever Livy was, that was my country."* And in his *Eve's Diary* (1906) he gave Adam, standing at Eve's grave, the line we keep as the house's own: *"Wheresoever she was, there was Eden."* It is a literary line, not a biographical one — but it carries the truth Twain lived: Eden is not a place. It is a *person*. Eden was wherever the other one stood.

**TWAIN is built on that single idea: that a bond between two people is the one thing worth making permanent.** So we set not one stone but two — one for each soul, cut from the sky they were born under, the twelve birth-stones of the zodiac. Repelled by gamified astro-app aesthetics; drawn to the *refined* mystic. Buys two stones for herself and a soul-sister, or self + a parent. **Needs:** mysticism with taste, meaning without kitsch, a piece intelligent people can wear. **Fears:** looking like she shops at an astrology app; loud, gimmicky, "spiritual-girlie" design.

> **Director's correction applied.** The earlier interlocking monogram read as a curved double-C in a vertical oval — too close to Cartier's CC and ambiguous on "TT." It is **retired.** The house mark is redrawn as an **architectural interlocking double-T** with a north-star at the junction: rectilinear where Cartier is curved, no vertical oval, unmistakably two T's. A trademark-clearance pass is required before first production use.

The **wordmark alone** (TWAIN / FINE JEWELRY, no mark) is a permitted fourth lockup for tight horizontal spaces (email header, footer, ad strip).

## 2.2 The mark, in one line
Two serif T's interlock around a single north-star — *two, guided to one.* That is the whole idea; the mark needs no further defense.

## 2.3 How ours differs from Cartier (keep this page)
- **Letterform:** rectilinear serif **T's** (horizontal bar + vertical stem) — not curved **C's**.
- **Container:** no vertical oval. The mark stands free; the hallmark uses a **round** coin/wax seal, never an oval cartouche.
- **Focal device:** an engraved **8-point north-star** at the junction (Twain's own signal) — Cartier has none.
- **Finish:** aged/brushed gold, engraved/intaglio — not high-polish.

## 2.4 Clear space & minimum size
- **Clear space:** the cap-height of the "T" on all four sides of any lockup; nothing intrudes.
- **Minimum sizes:** primary lockup ≥ 22 mm / 120 px wide · wordmark-only ≥ 18 mm / 90 px · the TT mark ≥ 10 mm / 28 px (favicon drops the wordmark, keeps the mark).

## 2.5 Color variants
Midnight-indigo ground (aged-gold mark) is the default. Approved grounds: Midnight Indigo, Ivory Bone, Oxblood, Heirloom Forest. Mark/wordmark render in **Antique Gold** (metallic/foil) or **single-color** (Ivory on dark, Graphite on light). One color per execution — never a gradient.

## 2.6 The hallmark discipline
The wax-seal is the "found by the wearer" signature — it lives on the **clasp, the box interior, the certificate, the wax** — places of intimacy, not the face of the piece. Old-money logo-silence: the mark is *recognized, not advertised*.

## 2.7 Misuse — 10 don'ts
1. Don't reinstate the oval double-C monogram (retired — Cartier-adjacent).
2. Don't stretch, condense, or rotate the mark or wordmark.
3. Don't bold or italicize the TWAIN wordmark (bold didones read new-money).
4. Don't apply a gold gradient or metallic-sheen/emboss filter (the #1 AI-luxe tell).
5. Don't place the mark on a busy photo without a scrim or clear ground.
6. Don't crowd the clear space or shrink below minimum size.
7. Don't recolor into off-palette hues or bright high-polish gold.
8. Don't add a drop shadow, outer glow, or 3D bevel.

# 03 · Color System

**The 10% is sacred.** Gold, oxblood, forest, and the zodiac stone *share* the accent budget — they do not each get 10%. ## 6.1 — How TWAIN sounds

Before a word is written, remember the posture. Old money does not announce; it is recognized. The same restraint that governs the logo's negative space and the palette's muted depth governs the language: **we never say "luxury," "exclusive," or "premium" — we demonstrate them by withholding them.** A sentence that has to call itself precious isn't. Our wealth signal is what we leave out.

The voice is a love letter that happens to be selling a ring — literary, unhurried, and certain of itself. It speaks the way an heirloom is handed down: quietly, with the weight of having been here before you and the assumption it will outlast you.

### Tone — three adjectives

## 6.5 — Taglines

Eight lines, ranked. The top three are approved for hero use across the site, packaging, and campaigns; the remainder are sanctioned for secondary surfaces (social, gift cards, editorial). Several are drawn from Mark Twain's own devotion writing — the literary shadow the house is named for.

> **Usage discipline.** Never stack two taglines. Never set a tagline in all-caps with an exclamation mark. Never pair a tagline with a price or a promotion. A tagline sits in air — generous tracking, room around it — exactly as the type system specifies.

## 6.6 — Naming conventions

A maison names with restraint and meaning. Names are evocative or literary — never SKU-coded in public, never descriptive-cute.

### Collections — named for devotion, place, or the heavens

Use a single, resonant word or a short literary phrase. Draw from: the celestial (Polaris, Meridian, Equinox), the literary-devotional (Eden, The Olivia, Wheresoever), and old-money permanence (Heirloom, Inheritance, The Ledger).

- **Polaris** — the north-star device pieces; the "guidance" sub-line
- **The Inheritance** — legacy and passed-down pieces, plain settings, deepest restraint

**Rule:** Collection names are title-cased, set in the didone display face, and never followed by "Collection™" or a season tag. One word earns more than three.

### Individual pieces — `[Form] · [Two-Stone Pairing]`

Public-facing pieces are named by form and pairing, letting the two signs do the storytelling. The pairing is written **sign + sign**, never the abstract stone names alone (the bond is people, not gems).

- Internal SKUs (`EDN-RNG-SCO-CAN`) stay internal. The customer never sees a code.

Before any line ships, run it through five questions. A "no" on any one means rewrite.

1. **Could it sit over a discount banner?** If yes, it's too generic. *(Kill it.)*
2. **Does it raise its voice** — exclamation, all-caps, hype word, urgency? *(Lower it.)*
3. **Does it say "luxury / exclusive / premium / timeless" about itself?** *(Show, don't claim.)*
4. **Is there more than one metaphor in the sentence?** *(Spend only one.)*
5. **Would a devoted letter-writer from 1890 recognize the cadence?** If not, slow it down.

This section governs every surface a TWAIN piece touches between the bench and the bond. Restraint is the lever throughout: we signal a house by what is withheld — foil over print, deboss over color, one material over eleven, vast air over density.

**The two governing finishes for the whole system:**

- **Application:** flexible sealing wax (bends, won't shatter in transit) on ribbon crossings, certificate folios, and client envelopes.
- **Discipline:** one seal per object. The wax is the punctuation mark — it ends the sentence, it doesn't decorate it.

## 7.8 In-Store / Atelier Feel & Art Direction Anchors

The physical (or virtual) atelier is the box scaled to a room.

- **Grounds:** Midnight Indigo walls or panels; Ivory Bone for trays and reading surfaces; **Heirloom Forest wool felt** for the stone-presentation trays (the box liner, scaled — stones glow on deep matte green, not black velvet).
- **Light:** soft directional warm light, single-source, raking across the bench to catch the gold's matte sheen — the craft-as-content lighting (Harry Winston's stone-glow, but warmer/aged, never cold spotlight glitter).
- **Hardware & seals:** the **TT-oval starburst** appears on drawer pulls, tray corners, the bench plaque, and the door — as a discreet seal, never large signage. The atelier name on the door is the *wordmark, small, in gilt-on-glass*, with vast clear space.
- **The ritual:** every piece is presented two-stones-first — the two stones laid on the Forest tray, named aloud, *then* set into the box on the Ivory ground, ribbon tied, wax sealed, Bond Card and Certificate placed. The sale is the unboxing rite performed in reverse.
